Man crushed by ATV

A 52 year-old Coos Bay business owner died Sunday, when his four-wheeler rolled over in an abandoned rock quarry near Tillamook.

According to the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 4 p.m., deputies responded to a report of an off-road motor vehicle crash that killed the Bay Area resident, at the quarry on Saddle Mountain Road in the Brown’s Camp area.

The accident occurred when a group of off-roaders, including the victim, drove their vehicles across the quarry and up a steep hillside.

The victim was driving his jeep up the hillside when it hit a rock at about 40 feet and rolled over. As it rolled, he was ejected and the jeep crushed him. He was not wearing his safety belt at the time of the accident, according to police.

Undersheriff Terry Huntsman said the site where the accident occurred is not designated for that use by the Oregon Department of Forestry.
