CDC's 1997 Behavioral Risk Factor Data
Now Available Online

How were people in the United States behaving in 1997? Curious about which state reported the highest number of people with diabetes? Are more men or women smoking cigarettes? How many of us were screened for colorectal cancer?

You can find out at www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/brfss

Point and click on Prevalence Data to find 1997 data on the healthy--and risky--behaviors of U.S. adults for one or all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The data are from CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)*, the world's largest continuously conducted telephone health survey.

Topics for which 1997 data are available include:

  • health status
  • health insurance
  • diabetes
  • smoking
  • pregnancy and women's health
  • immunization
  • HIV/AIDS
  • hypertension
  • injury
  • alcohol consumption
  • colorectal cancer screening, and
  • cholesterol awareness

For each behavior or risk factor, you can choose the way you want to see the data:

  • grouped by sex, age, race, income, and education
  • side-by-side comparisons of different states
  • side-by-side comparisons of different years (1995-1997)
  • data for all states (and certain U.S. territories) on one page

*Any published material derived from the CDC data should acknowledge the BRFSS and CDC as the original source.
