Education and outreach
The USGS Wisconsin Water Science Center participates in area science conferences and shows.
Many employees of the USGS in Wisconsin have done outreach in schools. From Career Day to Earth Day to Geology Week, our office has experienced, enthusiastic employees who are willing to talk about our work, give demonstrations of USGS-type activities, and answer questions that kids may have.
Types of outreach and talks that we've done:
- assisted with Plant Science merit badges for Boy Scouts
- given career talks to various age groups on what it's like to be a geologist/hydrologist/biologist/cartographer
- example demonstrations include simple water chemistry experiments to discussing rocks and fossils
- where they are from and how they are formed
Science field trips:
- streamgaging demonstrations
- how we collect the data and how it gets used
GIS Days. Our booth includes information on:
- maps and how they are made
- activities include maps games for kids along with prizes
- water quality and macroinvertebrate sampling demonstrations with high school students
