NOAA AWARDS MAINTENANCE CONTRACT FOR NOAA WEATHER RADIO TRANSMITTERS

The Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has awarded a contract with potential value of more than $7 million to Independent Technology, Inc., of Scottsville, N.Y., to provide maintenance services that support the NOAA Weather Radio transmitter network.

The one-year base contract has an initial value of $1,406,830. If four one-year options are exercised, the contract will have a five-year value of $7,793,429.

NOAA's National Weather Service operates more than 425 NOAA Weather Radio transmitters in all 50 states and U.S. territories. Known as the "voice of the National Weather Service," NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts NWS forecasts, warnings and hazard information to people 24-hours a day.

Independent Technology, Inc., will provide on-site maintenance services at 127 transmitter sites throughout the central and southern United States. The contractor will also provide replacement parts, parts repair, and telephone technical assistance for other technicians supporting 194 additional NOAA Weather Radio sites nationwide.

Independent Technologies is a small business concern that provides electronic maintenance services. They are a recipient of a Department of Commerce Partners in Quality Contracting Award for 1996.

Inexpensive NOAA Weather Radios give people the capability to listen to frequent updates of weather information aired on one of seven high-band FM frequencies. Some weather radios offer an alarm tone feature which can trigger a built-in alarm that warns listeners of severe weather announcements in their area. NOAA Weather Radios can be purchased at stores where electronics are sold.
