Productivity declined 0.4 percent in the nonfarm business sector in fourth-quarter 2008, as
output fell faster than hours. Unit labor costs increased 5.7 percent. Manufacturing
output per hour fell 4.0 percent; unit labor costs increased 14.7 percent. All rates are
seasonally adjusted annual rates.

Labor productivity (output per hour) increased in wholesale trade and retail
trade, and fell in food services and drinking places in 2007. Productivity
rose in 68 percent of the detailed industries studied, less than the 80 percent
with productivity gains from 2005 to 2006.
