Duckweed is a group of amateur musicians at the USGS Science Center in Menlo Park, California. The group meets at noon every Friday and enjoys playing traditional American and Celtic music. Instruments include the banjo, bodhran (Irish drum) and other percussion, concertina, fiddle, flute, guitar, mandolin, penny whistle, and recorder. The members represent most of the major scientific programs of the USGS in Menlo Park.
Duckweed has performed at the Menlo Park campus-wide open house, at the annual USGS library holiday celebration, and at other occasions. Duckweed was founded in 1998 by Warren Nokleberg and Vic Mossotti. Duckweed debuted as the "opener" for talks on the "Music of Earthquakes" given by Andy Michael at the USGS in 1999.
