Parsons, KS -- State and federal officials announced today that travel trailers are being purchased to meet the immediate housing needs for individuals who have been displaced as a result of the severe storms and tornadoes on April 19th and 20th.
"Disaster victims in Crawford, Labette and Neosho counties may qualify for this temporary program," said Anne Allen, state coordinating officer.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and other state and local representatives, have been making assessments of the available rental housing resources in the affected counties. "When compared to the number of people needing temporary housing assistance, there is a shortfall," said Louis Botta, federal coordinating officer.
He added that "FEMA's Disaster Housing Program is a temporary housing program designed to help people with short-term housing while they work to solve their permanent, long term needs."
Anyone who desires to be considered for a travel trailer, or has questions regarding travel trailers should visit the Disaster Recovery Center located in the Parsons Municipal Building, 112 S. 17th Street, Parsons, Kansas, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. If an individual has already registered with FEMA's toll free number (1-800-462-9029) and is interested in a travel trailer may call FEMA's toll free Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 (TTY 1-800-462-7585).
FEMA considers travel trailers to be "interim housing" and will leave them in place as long as needed. All disaster recovery actions are undertaken with the hope that people can return to their own home or acquire permanent housing.
The placement of all travel trailers will be in compliance with all federal, state and local government rules and regulations for zoning, building, health and safety.
