Parsons, KS -- Federal, state and local officials announced that two free presentations on Safe Room construction and School Design will be held Monday, May 22nd at the City Municipal Building Auditorium located at 112 South 17th Street in Parsons.
Larry Tanner, research associate from Texas Tech University's Wind Engineering Research Center in Lubbock, Texas, will deliver the presentations that are open to the public.
The first presentation at 2:00 p.m. will discuss mass shelters. Individuals responsible for the safety of a large group of individuals during a tornado threat will gain valuable information. Public officials, business owners and school administrators throughout the declared area and surrounding communities are encouraged to attend.
Mr. Tanner's second presentation at 7:00 p.m., will discuss "Surviving Tornado Alley." The emphasis will be on Safe Room construction and wind resistant construction. Anyone who is rebuilding or considering new construction is encouraged to attend.
"There are a number of engineering techniques that can be applied in new and existing construction that will help structures withstand severe wind conditions," said Louis Botta, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) federal coordinating officer.
"Whether you choose to 'do-it-yourself' or hire a contractor, it is very important to use the approved plans offered through (FEMA)," said Rob Reschke, alternate state coordinating officer for Kansas. Brochures that include these plans will be available at the presentation "free of charge."
"Before any construction begins, you should contact your local municipality and apply for a building permit," Reschke added.
Following the presentations, Mr. Tanner will be available to answer specific questions pertaining to an individual's needs.
