KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region VII office in Kansas City, Mo., will donate a second batch of used computer equipment to the Newburg R-II School District in a ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, December 5, at 1:30 p.m., at the district superintendent's office, located at 701 Wolf Pride Dr. in Newburg, Mo. Beth Freeman, director of FEMA's regional office in Kansas City, will be on hand to make the presentation.

The total original value of computers donated to the school district is $276,926. That includes an earlier donation of central processing units, printer hubs and switches that had an original value of $194,976. This recent donation, originally valued at $81,950, is made up of central processing units, monitors, fax machines, network hubs and keyboards.

FEMA Region VII Director Beth Freeman said she was glad her staff has been able to participate in this program.

"Computers are a key aspect of how we do business every day," Freeman said. "I'm delighted that we have been able to help the students of Newburg get the tools they need to succeed."

Authority for the donation of computer equipment comes from Executive Order 12999 signed in April 1996 by President Bill Clinton. Titled, "Educational Technology: Ensuring Opportunity for All Children in the Next Century," its purpose is to help school districts acquire computer equipment they otherwise would find too cost prohibitive.

Before it could donate the equipment, the regional office first offered the equipment to other FEMA facilities. After 14 days, the property is then reported as excess to the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), who in turn advertises it to other federal agencies, state agencies and school districts in a four-state region comprised of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.
