Sat, 09 May 2009 07:15:00 EDT Low pressure centers over the Great Lakes and northeastern U.S. will continue to move eastward. A weatk cold front extending from a low over New York into the Mid-Atlantic will trigger showers and thunderstorms as it moves east. A second cold front extends from a low over the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast states, then trailing west into the Southern Plains. The low and the northern portions of the front will move eastward triggering more showers and thunderstorms. The souther portion of the front will drift very slowly south. The combination of the slow moving front and a moist southerly flow will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to an area stretching from the Southern Plains eastward through the Tennessee Valley and into the Southeast. Since areas of the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley had earlier experienced excessive rainfall from recent events, flooding is a potential with the expected precipitation this weekend. Sat, 09 May 2009 07:38:54 EDT Yesterday, over 20 tornadoes with two fatalities and four injuries were reported. In Kentucky, an elderly man was killed when his pickup truck was flipped over into a pond. Another fatality was reported in conjunction with an EF 2 tornado near Charity, Missouri. Tornadoes were also reported in Illinois, Iowa, Tennessee and Texas. Today, three areas have been designated with a slight risk of severe thunderstorms. For this afternoon and early tonight severe thunderstorms are possible for parts of northeastern Pennsylvania, eastern New York into western New England and an area from southern Virgina through the Carolinas into central Alabama. Officials estimate that the fire is 10% contained with 80 homes damaged or destroyed. Red flag warnings continue for Southern Santa Barbara County.
