Writing Goals, Objectives, and Indicators for PRM-funded Humanitarian Assistance Projects

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM) together with InterAction, the largest coalition of U.S.-based international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) focused on the world’s poor and most vulnerable people, will host two seminars for NGOs on Developing Objectives and Indicators for PRM-funded humanitarian assistance projects. The seminars are open to all NGOs interested in PRM humanitarian assistance projects. One seminar will be held Wednesday, September 17 from 9:30am-12:30pm. Due to an overwhelming response, we are offering a second session of the seminar.

Fruzsina Csaszar and Emily Bruno, Monitoring and Evaluation Specialists from PRM’s Office of Policy and Planning Resources, will review how to develop and write goals, objectives and indicators for PRM-funded humanitarian assistance projects. There will be time during the seminars to do practice exercises on developing objectives and indicators with PRM staff there to answer questions.
Session Objectives:
1) To learn how to define and identify goals, objectives and indicators;
2) To learn how to create objectives and indicators that are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound);
As part of objective #2, seminar participants will examine sample objectives and indicators--both best practices as well as examples of weak objectives/indicators. (Note: The seminar will not focus on a specific sector (such as water and sanitation or nutrition); rather, it will review the process of developing sound and measurable objectives and indicators for all sectors of PRM-funded humanitarian assistance.)
At the end of the seminars, PRM would be interested in hearing from the participants regarding best practices and challenges in gathering data, what constitutes data quality, and lessons learned on how to effectively report on agreed-upon objectives and indicators.
