Forests

USGS research focuses on healthy forest management in the United States, including understanding forest systems, sustaining biodiversity and ecosystem function, developing resource management options, recovery of sensitive and status species, supporting management of aquatic forest habitats, conducting landscape scale assessments, and addressing forest stressors such as climate change, fire, and pathogens.

Listed below are examples of research projects available online and general information from USGS about grasslands.

  • Koa Community Ecology: Managing Alien Mammals (Hakalau Forest national Wildlife Refuge, Hawaii, Ka'u Forest Reserve, Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kona Forest Unit of the Big Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex) (PIERC) (also related to Invasive Species)
  • Optimization Strategies for Sediment Reduction Practices on Roads in Steep, Forested Terrain. Publication Brief. Download the File. (44 KB, PDF) (WERC)

Physiological Ecology and Ecohydrology of Coastal Forested EcosystemsPhysiological Ecology and Ecohydrology of Coastal Forested Wetlands - The form, function, and productivity of wetland communities are influenced strongly by the hydrologic regime of an area. Wetland ecosystems persist by depending upon surpluses of rainfall, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and frequency and amplitude of water-level fluctuations.
