Baseline and Flood Stage Changes to Be Made to River Gauge for Talkeetna River

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service Alaska-Pacific River Forecast Center (APRFC) announced today that it will change the datum (baseline) and the flood stages for the river gauge on the Talkeetna River at the railroad bridge. NOAA is an agency in the U.S. Commerce Department.

The river gauge will now read 5.20 feet higher than in past years and the flood stage will also be raised. The flood stage associated with the gauge at the bridge was 10.0 feet. The new flood stage will be 13.0 feet, which takes into account the datum, or baseline, change as well as a re-evaluation of the flood impacts in Talkeetna. As a result of the change, the reported gauge height at the railroad bridge will correspond closely with the U.S. Geologic Survey gauge located upstream.
