The National Sea Grant College Program has named Stephanie Showalter of the University of Mississippi Law School as the new director of the Mississippi-Alabama Legal Program and the National Sea Grant Law Center. Sea Grant is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Showalter, who has been with the legal program and law center since September 2002, said she was “honored” by the opportunity to lead the program and the center. “The Legal Program and the Center will continue to contribute high-quality legal research to the ocean and coastal law field,” she said. Located on the campus of the University of Mississippi, the legal program has conducted legal research, education and outreach since 1972. It is operated in conjunction with the National Sea Grant Law Center, created in February 2002. “Stephanie Showalter has the legal expertise and leadership skills for engaging the complex issues that Sea Grant’s many constituencies confront daily,” said Ronald Baird, director of the National Sea Grant College Program. “That need is great and the opportunities for the Sea Grant Law Center are enormous.” The National Sea Grant College Program is a network of 30 programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources. The program receives a major share of its funding from NOAA. Showalter will be responsible for informing Sea Grant stakeholders on ocean and coastal law issues; researching and publishing papers on natural resources, marine and environmental law issues; and supervising law student research and writing projects. She will also continue to assist organizations and governmental agencies with interpretation of statutes, regulations and case law. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Penn State University and a joint juris doctor/master’s of studies in environmental law degree from Vermont Law School. She is the editor of The SandBar and Sea Grant Law and Policy Digest.
