A major redesign of the Occupational Safety and Health
Statistics (OSHS) system, the nation's primary source of
information on job-related injuries and illnesses, began in
1988. The OSHS survey is a mandatory Bureau of Labor
Statistics (BLS) survey, and is collected via mail in
cooperation with State agencies. In order to fully convey to
the reader the extensiveness of the OSHS redesign, this paper
begins with a brief historical development and overview of
the program.
