IACUC 101 in Portland, Oregon
August 31, 2000:
On October 6, 2000 the Applied Research Ethics Association, in conjunction with
the Oregon Biomedical Research Association, the Oregon Health Sciences
University and the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, will present IACUC
101. This course will educate those who are responsible for their institution's
animal care program by covering the rules, regulations and policies necessary
for compliance with the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
and the USDA animal welfare regulations.
IACUC 101 is valuable for new IACUC members, administrators, veterinarians,
IACUC trainers, animal care staff, researchers, regulatory personnel, and others
interested in IACUC roles and responsibilities. It is a full day didactic and
interactive course, and participants will receive an extensive Resources Manual
plus other valuable reference materials. The program will be delivered by
faculty renown for their expertise, and include representatives from private and
academic biomedical research institutions, OLAW and USDA.
The course will be held at the Oregon Health Sciences University, from 8:00 am
to 4:30 pm, in Portland Oregon on October 6, 2000. For a conference brochure

Workshop on Definitions of Pain and Distress
June 14, 2000:
The NIH Office of Extramural Research announces a workshop to be conducted under
the auspices of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research on the public
policy implications of changes to the definitions of pain and distress in USDA's
Policy #11, and in the pain and distress categories on the USDA annual report.
The workshop is responsive to the NIH Regulatory Burden Report
(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/regulatoryburden/index.htm) that
recommended increased collaboration between the research community and OLAW,
USDA, and AAALAC, in the formulation and interpretation of policies and

May 1, 2000: IACUC Issues in Field Biology Addressed In Educational Conference
An upcoming animal welfare educational conference
will address Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Issues in Field
Biology. Sponsored by the Medical University of South Carolina, Benedict
College, and OLAW, the conference will be held September 21-22, 2000 in
Charleston, SC. The meeting will focus on issues involving IACUC approval and
