Hydrogen
Nationally, as well as internationally, hydrogen is seen as one of the most promising future energy carriers. Hydrogen--an energy carrier rather than an energy source--can be produced from various domestic energy sources including geothermal, wind, water and nuclear energy. Hydrogen as a fuel for internal combustion engines promises high efficiency while maintaining near zero emissions.
Domestic as well as international overall equipment manufacturers have been working on advanced propulsion concepts with hydrogen as the primary fuel. These propulsion concepts include chemical conversion of the energy stored in hydrogen into electricity using fuel cells as well as conversion into mechanical energy in internal combustion engines.
