NOAA ANNOUNCES $4.6 MILLION GRANT TO
WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION

The Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has awarded a $4.6 million grant to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Mass., through its Cooperative Institute for Climate and Ocean Research (CICOR).

The CICOR grant will be used to support the program’s core projects in coastal ocean research, the role of the ocean in climate, and analysis of marine ecosystems. CICOR is one of NOAA’s 11 Joint and Cooperative Institutes bringing together the resources of a research-oriented university or institution and NOAA.

“Through our Joint and Cooperative Institute program we promote collaboration between academic and NOAA researchers,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “This partnership effort enables hundreds of outstanding scientists to work cooperatively with our agency in research relevant to understanding the interaction between the Earth’s oceans and atmosphere. NOAA is proud to make this award to the Cooperative Institute for Climate and Ocean Research.”

Ten specific projects have been identified for funding including the international Argo ocean observing program, a station in the northwest tropical Atlantic to measure the upper ocean to investigate air-sea interactions related to climate variability, the United States Surface Ocean-Lower Atmospheres Study (SOLAS) summer school, and a collaborative effort with NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory to investigate the Explorer Ridge study the birth of new ocean crust off the coast of western North America, part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire."

The Cooperative Institute for Climate and Ocean Research is a partnership between Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and NOAA. For more information about CICOR please visit http://www.whoi.edu/science/cicor.

NOAA is dedicated to enhancing economic security and national safety through the prediction and research of weather and climate-related events and providing environmental stewardship of our nation’s coastal and marine resources.
