DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AWARDS BRONZE MEDAL TO
GRAND RAPIDS HYDROLOGIST MARK WALTON

The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded its Bronze Medal to NOAA National Weather Service hydrologist Mark L. Walton of the Grand Rapids Weather Forecast Office for his efforts as a member of the Significant River Flood Outlook Team. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is an agency of the Commerce Department.

Retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator presented the award to team leader Frank Richards who represented the team during the ceremony today at the University of Maryland in Adelphi, Md.

Walton and other team members were recognized for incorporating user input in the development of a new Significant River Flood Outlook, which allows emergency managers, water resource managers and others to better prepare for potential flooding.

The Bronze Medal is the third highest award presented annually by the Department of Commerce in recognition of employees, groups and offices that have made significant contributions to the public.
