Malloway and Saunders Work to Save Steelhead Recognized in Ceremony Two Carmel Valley residents with the Carmel River Steelhead Association will be recognized as Environmental Heroes by the nation's marine fisheries agency for their work at improving Carmel River habitat and saving the threatened Steelhead trout populations in the area. NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, an agency of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the Commerce Department, will present the awards on May 1 at a ceremony held at the Carmel Valley Trail and Saddle Club in Carmel Valley, Calif. "Geoff Malloway and Clive Saunders have been very instrumental in helping save these threatened fish by directing efforts to rescue stranded trout and helping our agency with enforcement efforts in this region," says NOAA Fisheries Office for Law Enforcement Special Agent Roy Torres of Pacific Grove, Calif. "This arrangement should be a model for future efforts." Malloway coordinates and provides resources to rescue stranded trout at various places along the Carmel River. Saunders represents the Carmel River Steelhead Association in their efforts to help the fish. The Carmel River Watershed District provides the community a means for engaging with NOAA Fisheries in protecting and recovering threatened Steelhead trout throughout the Carmel River Watershed District. The candidates were nominated by the NOAA Fisheries Protected Resource Division and Special Agent Torres of NOAA Fisheries OLE's Southwest Division, who has been involved with the program since 1999. Established in 1995 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Earth Day, the Environmental Hero award is presented to individuals and organizations throughout the United States who have contributed to the protection and preservation of the nation's environment. Previous recipients include oceanographers Jean-Michel Cousteau and Sylvia Earle, and actor Ted Danson, head of the American Oceans Campaign. There are a total of 27 honorees this year.
