What is Menopause?

Menopause is the time in a woman's life when her period stops and she can no longer become pregnant. It is a normal change in a woman's body. A woman will know she has reached menopause when she has not had a period for 12 months in a row (and there are no other causes, such as pregnancy or illness, for this change). This happens for most women after age 45.

What Callers Want to Know

Highlights from the womenshealth.gov call center

We received an e-mail from a man who wanted to know more about Rh factor during pregnancy. Most pregnant women who are Rh negative need treatment to protect the baby from getting a blood disease that can lead to anemia. Since his wife’s blood type is B positive and his is O negative, he wanted to know if the baby would be at any risk.

We encouraged him to follow up with his wife’s doctor for more information about Rh factor. The doctor will be able to answer any questions and make the appropriate recommendations for treatment. We also gave him links for more information about pregnancy.
