Margaret Equopi Baté was born and raised in Cameroon, West Africa. She obtained her M.S. in Health Education at Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas. Margaret is program coordinator for Beyond Traditional Borders (BTB) at Rice University. BTB is a new unique, multidisciplinary educational program with the aim of training the next generation of students to reach beyond traditional disciplinary and geographic borders to understand, address, and solve global health disparities. (BTB is funded through Rice University in support of Dr. Rebecca Richards-Kortum.)

Margaret previously managed and coordinated school-based projects for students in grades 6-12 in collaboration with medical students and other community partners. She is a strong advocate for minority health disparities, cultural competency, global health and women's health (including immigrant women) issues. She strongly supports and organizes community health fairs in neighborhoods, churches and international health projects.

She has served and continues to serve on several boards and committees including: Houston International Community Health Summit, Inc.; Mayoral Advisory Board for International Affairs and Development (MABIAD)-Africa; Region VI Women's Health Alliance; Friends of Cameroon Returned Peace Corps Group; Cameroon Students Association (CAMSA)-Houston and National President CAMSA-USA.
