March is National Kidney Month
Kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States.
In 2000, more than 26 million U.S. adults had chronic kidney disease
(CKD) yet most didn’t know it. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the
primary causes.
American Diabetes Alert
Day
Nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes and, of these, about 6 million
do not know they have it. If current trends continue, 1 of 3 people born
in the United States in 2000 will develop diabetes during their
lifetime. In 2007, about 1.6 million adults were newly diagnosed with
diabetes, and at least 57 million adults were at risk of developing
diabetes. However, studies have shown that people at risk who lose
weight and increase their physical activity can prevent or delay
diabetes.
Diabetes Care Better Than 10
Years Ago, But More Improvement Needed
A recently published study conducted by the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) indicates diabetes care improved over the past 10 years; however, there is still a great
need to focus on additional improvements.
Surveillance Data Show Improvements in Diabetes Care and Outcomes
During the past decade, the proportion of adults with diabetes who check their blood
sugar at least daily increased by 56%, and the proportion of adults with diabetes
who reported having a cardiovascular disease condition dropped by 11%.
CDC develops a chronic kidney disease
initiative
The Kidney Disease Initiative is designed to provide public health
strategies for promoting kidney health.
