Crude and Age-Adjusted Incidence of Diagnosed Diabetes per 1,000 Population Aged 18–79 Years, United States, 1980–2007
From 1980 to 2007, the crude incidence of diagnosed diabetes increased 136% from 3.3 to 7.8 per 1,000 population. Similarly, the age-adjusted incidence increased 123% from 3.5 to 7.8 per 1,000 population, suggesting that the majority of the change was not due to the aging of the population. However, from 1980 to 2007, incidence did not increase at a constant rate. Both crude and age-adjusted incidence remained unchanged in 1980s, and then increased sharply in 1990s through 2007.
