Hurricane Gustav Response Exceeds $9.5 Million

LONG BEACH, Miss. -- A total of $9,599,636 in Hurricane Gustav disaster grants has been approved for residents, business owners, local governments and private nonprofit organizations located in Adams, Hancock, Harrison, Washington and Wilkinson counties, according to officials of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
FEMA and MEMA officials provided the following disaster assistance figures through Thursday, October 23, 2008:

Total Individual Assistance approved is $4,753,855.

$4,026,346 has been approved for housing assistance.

$727,509 has been approved for disaster related other needs assistance.

$4,845,781 in federal funds has been obligated for Public Assistance - assistance to help state and local governments recover from Gustav. This assistance can include costs of debris removal, emergency protective measures, repair of public buildings, roads, bridges, parks and publicly owned utilities.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) has issued 3,302 disaster loan applications; 2,675 residential and 627 to businesses. A total of $433,300 in low-interest disaster loans has been approved thus far.

6,900 individuals from the declared counties have registered for disaster assistance.

4,935 property damage inspections have been completed.

2,702 renters, homeowners, business owners, private nonprofit organizations and community leaders have been contacted by FEMA/MEMA Community Relations teams.

2,535 residents and business owners have visited Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) for face-to-face meetings with disaster recovery specialists.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency are urging anyone who sustained damage from Hurricane Gustav to register with FEMA for disaster assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing- or speech-impaired, or by going online to www.fema.gov.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
