ORLANDO, Fla. -- Community Relations (CR) Specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Florida's State Emergency Response Team (SERT) are reaching out to individuals and families in Brevard County affected by Tropical Storm Fay.

"Having accurate information about the application process is vital to survivors as they begin the process of recovering from Tropical Storm Fay. As the teams go door-to-door, it lets them know that there is help available," said State Coordinating Officer Craig Fugate.

CR Teams visit residences, churches and community organizations providing information about the federal disaster registration process. Team members also meet with representatives of community-based agencies, community leaders and public officials.

"As CR Teams seek out locations where people affected by the disaster might be found, they gather information to help those with special needs, such as the elderly and people with disabilities," said Tom Davies, FEMA's federal coordinating officer for Florida disaster recovery. "When unmet needs are identified, CR Teams pass that information on to the state or federal staff best able to respond."

People in Brevard County affected by Tropical Storm Fay are urged to apply for federal disaster assistance by registering online at www.fema.gov. Online registration is available 24 hours a day. Residents with damage also can call 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 for the hearing or speech impaired. Lines are open from 7 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week until further notice.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
