CLINTON, Miss. -- Mississippi residents and business owners in the disaster-declared counties of Bolivar, Warren, Washington and Wilkinson who sustained damage due to the March 20 severe storms and flooding have four weeks to apply for disaster assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The last day applications will be accepted for disaster assistance is July 7. Loan applications to the    U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for disaster-related losses must also be submitted by that date.

"We want people to understand that this deadline is for new disaster applications," said Michael L. Parker, FEMA's federal coordinating officer. "For individuals who have already applied, their cases will continue to be processed. New applications will not be accepted after the July 7 deadline, however."

Federal and state disaster recovery officials urge those who have not done so to apply as soon as possible by calling the toll-free registration number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired. Individuals also may register for disaster assistance online at www.fema.gov.

"Nearly 500 individuals and households have registered for disaster assistance in the four-county area and we don't want anyone left out," said MEMA Director Mike Womack. "To date, more than $1.2 million in disaster aid has been approved for those that have applied. In addition to that grant money, more than $1.1 million in disaster loans through the SBA has been approved."

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
