Enrique Nieves, Jr., MS

Enrique Nieves, Jr. joined CDC in 1988 where he initially worked with the National Centers for Prevention Services, Division of Sexually Transmitted Diseases. He spent the first part of his CDC career as a Public Health Advisor to state health departments in Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and Texas, managing public health programs in the areas of HIV prevention, AIDS surveillance, breast and cervical cancer screening, cancer surveillance, and prevention research.

He was transferred to Atlanta and assigned to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion as a Project Officer in 1996. Enrique joined the Epidemiology Program Office (EPO) in 2001 and was selected as Deputy Division Director for EPO’s Division of Prevention Research and Analytic Methods in May 2003. In 2004, after the Futures Initiative, Enrique was assigned to the newly created Division of Partnerships and Strategic Alliances, National Center for Health Marketing. In 2007, Enrique became Deputy Director of the Division of Integrated Surveillance Systems and Services at the National Center for Public Health Informatics. He was appointed Acting Director of the division in July, 2008.

Enrique began his career in public health as a Preventive Medicine Specialist with the U.S. Army during the latter part of the Vietnam War. His experiences prior to CDC with other agencies include five years with the Texas Department of Health in Houston and Corpus Christi, and three years with the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. Enrique holds a Master of Science in Counseling and Guidance from Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
