The workshop is designed to provide institutional officials, IACUC representatives (chairs, members, administrators and non-affiliates), veterinarians, animal facility supervisors and technicians, principal investigators, postdoctoral students, graduate students, and laboratory technicians with a forum to learn about changes in Federal regulations and to discuss and evaluate effective strategies to enhance performance standards for the humane care and use of animals in research. Officials from the regulatory agencies, national organizations and prominent faculty in animal-related research have been assembled to present topics highlighting the humane care and use of laboratory animals. The topics will be delivered in lecture format; attendees will be given the opportunity to ask questions following the presentations and to exchange information in topic-related workshops. At the conclusion of the conference attendees will have gained a realistic view of what they would have to do to improve institutional compliance, reduce regulatory burden, understand the interdependent roles of the institutional official, the IACUC, animal care providers, research staff, and develop effective education, training and safety programs.
