More than 500 research scientists and engineers working in government, the private sector, and the academic community will present their innovative work to make the nation safer at the conference, “Working Together: R&D Partnerships in Homeland Security.” The conference, sponsored by Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate (S&T), will be held April 27-28, 2005, at the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center in Boston, Mass.
The conference demonstrates the Department’s commitment to the creation of an enduring national scientific capability for homeland security, achieved through technical excellence, knowledge sharing, and R&D collaboration. The conference features 30 technical and four poster sessions on Research & Development advances to better understand, counter and respond to high-consequence chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosives and cyber terrorist threats.
Governor Mitt Romney will officially open the conference. Keynote speakers include Under Secretary for Science and Technology Chuck McQueary; Assistant Secretary Parney Albright; and Eric Mazur, Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics at Harvard University.
Pre-conference events scheduled for April 26th include a presentation and discussion of S&T’s solicitation process for research and development, a briefing on the National Response Plan, and a workshop showcasing the Department’s university-based Homeland Security Centers of Excellence. Science education continues as the theme for the April 26th evening welcoming event at the Boston Museum of Science, and is reinforced by the participation of a select group of DHS Scholars and Fellows whose research will be featured throughout the technical poster sessions.
