Poplar Bluff, MO -- In the two weeks since President Bush declared a major disaster in southeast Missouri for the severe storms and tornadoes of April 24-28, more than 320 people have applied for disaster assistance and nearly $250,000 has been issued in recovery grants and loans throughout the 19 counties. The declared counties are: Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Douglas, Dunklin, Howell, Iron, Madison, Oregon, Ozark, Perry, Reynolds, Ripley, Shannon, St. Francois, Stoddard, Texas and Wayne.

Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials report the following disaster recovery totals:

324 applications for assistance received
62 disaster housing grants totaling $100,649
146 housing inspections issued
140 housing inspections completed
SBA loan applications approved total $112,200
Individual and Family Grants total $11,675
156 people have visited Disaster Recovery Centers

To date, $224,524 is the total amount designated for disaster recovery.

Individuals, families and business owners who suffered losses in the designated counties because of the April 24-28 disaster should apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those with hearing or speaking difficulties. These teleregistration numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.
