Filtration and separation can represent as much as 80% of the operating costs for many industries, and membrane separations are gaining acceptance as a cost-effective option in many production settings. Newer, more efficient membrane separation techniques can lead to more streamlined production and produce significant improvements in quality.

The Center for Membrane Applied Science & Technology was founded in 1990 to conduct research, transfer technology and promote education in membrane technology. Originally known as the Center for Separations Using Thin Films, we adopted the new name because:

  • Membrane => We are a global leader in membrane research.
  • Applied => Our research program is cutting edge and applicable to industrial needs.
  • Science => Excellence in science is fundamental to our successful research.
  • Technology => We provide timely and relevant technology transfer to our sponsors.

The MAST Center is a National Science Foundation Multi-site Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (MUC I/UCRC), with sites at the University of Colorado and other affiliated Universities. Headquartered in Boulder, the MAST Center has a 17-year track record of innovation, operating efficiency, and broad-based corporate support which makes us a leading global membrane research center. We specialize in basic research for development applications. Global companies are currently focused on expanding markets, developing products and services that fit existing distribution, and maximizing shareholder return. At the MAST Center we understand resource allocation and have designed our center to complement our sponsors' strengths in product development. Our main focus is sponsor-relevant research, and we have received global recognition over the past twelve years for our high quality of technological and research results. For more details on our research program, see the MAST Center Research Areas.

Some of the largest membrane-products companies in the world are MAST Center sponsors. The MAST Center has greatly benefited from a sponsor mix that is balanced between major membrane manufacturers and a diverse group of membrane users from the petrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical, water treatment and food and beverage industries. These companies use their MAST Center sponsorship to help maintain leadership in their markets. Our sponsors recognize the many advantages of Center membership, and we invite you to consider MAST Center sponsorship for your organization.
