Strategic Areas
EVS programs and projects are carried out under five broad environment strategic areas. Inquiries concerning EVS experience and capabilities in these strategic areas can be made to the listed Strategic Area Managers.
Restoration and Pollution Prevention
EVS assists government agencies in specialized approaches to their compliance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA); the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA); pollution prevention directives; and other environmental management programs, such as long-term monitoring and environmental stewardship.
Natural Resource Systems and Integrated Assessments
Development and application of methods, tools, models, and data collection schemes -- to evaluate and project how human activities alter natural and managed ecosystems -- provides the foundation for EVS's natural resource science and assessment programs.
Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning
Policy analysis and planning programs integrate science, engineering, and law in studies that support development and implementation of environmental policy by federal agencies. These studies include evaluating regulatory, legislative, and compliance issues; preparing and implementing guidance and training programs; designing and implementing public involvement strategies; and carrying out pilot studies.
Risk and Waste Management
Risk and waste management capabilities include an integrated risk assessment program encompassing human health risk, facility risk, ecological risk, and risk communication, as well as the assessment of transportation of hazardous and radioactive materials.
Environmental Management Systems
EVS provides support to a variety of agencies in the development and implementation of environmental management systems (EMS) designed to integrate environmental concerns into the management structure of an organization. Examples of EMS include environmental compliance programs, pollution prevention programs, long-term stewardship programs, and environmental information management and communication systems.
