Indian Health Service
Serving American Indians and Alaska Natives
The Indian Health Service (IHS) provides health services to
approximately 1.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives who
belong to more than 550 federally recognized tribes in 35 states.
Positions include various disciplines and professions including health
care, administrative, technical, and clerical.
Programs
The Student Temporary Employment Program is a year round.
Students must be in good standing at an accredited university/college
taking at least a half-time academic course load. The nature of
duties does not have to be related to the student's academic/career
goals.
The Student Assistant Extern Program provides experience
that is directly related to the student's education program and career
goals. Participants who meet all the requirements of the program can
be converted to permanent employment at any time within 120 days of
satisfactory completion of degree requirements.

- Loan Repayment Program - Provides for the repayment of health
professionals educational loans for a two-year obligation
- Scholarship Program - Provides scholarships to American
Indian/Alaska Native health professionals
- Applicant Supply File - Applicants can be considered for

will continue to stay on file until the closing date of the vacancy
announcement.

Received an IHS Scholarship for accounting, during her junior and
senior year at the State University of New York at Oswego, graduated
December 1999. As of June 2000, Tina is an Accountant with the
Division of Financial Management, IHS Headquarters in Rockville,
Maryland.

Anna, a senior at Rockville High School, Rockville Maryland,
has been with IHS since the summer of 1998. During the school year,
she works 15 hours a week; and up to 40 hours during
spring/summer/winter breaks. She plans to attend college in Hofstra,
New York in communications.
