Witness the American Dream

[agency logo]

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Justice that carries out our country's immigration laws, providing for selective immigration and the controlled entry of visitors, business travelers and other non-U.S. citizens. INS defends America's borders against illegal immigration and drug smuggling, while also assisting immigrants who are eligible to become U.S. citizens.

The Chicago District of INS recruits students throughout the year. The Chicago District includes Chicago, Illinois; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Students often work in support of preparing Naturalization ceremonies. INS offers flexible work schedules, allowing students to concentrate on their education while still earning a salary. The pre-employment process includes meeting strict DOJ security requirements and submission to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. Students must also be U.S. citizens, age 16 or over, type 40 or more words per minute, be in good academic standing, and have at least a half-time course load.

In addition to these paid positions, students may also participate in unpaid student internships for school credit. If you are interested in this option, check with your school counselor to see if there is already an agreement between your school and the INS. If there is no agreement, have your school counselor contact our office at (312) 385-1929.
