Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)

Program Features:
Opportunity to work year round;
Flexible scheduling of work assignments;
Available to all students, including high school, undergraduate, graduate, and vocational/technical students;
Health and life insurance options; and,
Earn leave credit for vacations.

How Does It Work?
Opportunities include formal periods of work and study while you attend school (requiring a commitment by you, your school, and the CPSC);
Work experience is directly related to your academic field of study; and,
You will be eligible for permanent employment after you successfully complete the educational and work requirements.

Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)

Program Features:
Opportunities to work part-time while school is in session, and full-time during summer and school breaks;
Flexible scheduling of work assignments;
Available to all students, including high school, undergraduate, graduate, and vocation/technical students; and,
Earn leave credit for vacations.

How Does It Work?
Work periods are scheduled around school schedules, usually on a part-time basis while school is in session;
Work experience does not need to relate to the academic program being pursued; and,
There is no eligibility for conversion to a permanent position.

Where Can I Work?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has available positions in:
Bethesda, Maryland;
Gaithersburg, Maryland;
And, occasionally, around the country.

What Kind Of Work Can I Do?
You may choose from a variety of exciting fields such as:
Legal/Compliance;
Computer;
Scientific and Engineering; and
Administrative.

How Much Will I Earn?
Students can be hired at the GS-1 through the GS-7 level (Salary ranges from $15,125-$28,866 per annum). Salary would be determined by the applicant's education and experience.

Who Is Eligible?
Students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as degree seeking students and are taking at least a half-time academic, vocational or technical course in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2 year or 4 year college or university, graduate or professional school.
Participation must be determined by Federal, State, or local laws and standards governing the employment of minors.
U.S. Citizenship is not required, provided that the student is lawfully admitted into the United States as a permanent resident, or otherwise authorized to be employed in the United States. Students under the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) MUST be U.S. Citizens to be eligible for conversion to a permanent Federal position.
