  • September 11 - 26, 2009
    The Grand Canyon Music Festival, 26th Session
    Held at the South Rim's Shrine of the Ages, the 2009 season opens September 11th and 12th with the stringband ETHEL, the GCMF's Native American Composer Apprentice Project ensemble-in-residence. The Bonfiglio Group performs jazz and blues on September 18th, followed by festival founders Clare Hoffman and Robert Bonfiglio and friends on September 19th. The season concludes with the Enso String Quartet performing works by Ravel and Schumann on September 25th and 26th.

  • September 19 - November 1, 2009
    Grand Canyon Celebration of Art

    This major art show will provide an opportunity for park visitors to see the works of some of the best master artists in the nation as they seek to capture the beauty of the timeless Grand Canyon landscape on canvas.

    The show opens to the public on September 19. 2009 and continues through November 1, 2009. 
      
    Everyone is invited -- no admission fee. View the Modern Masters studio work and the Plein Air on the Rim paintings created during the Festival week. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to purchase a priceless piece of art that will forever be a memory of the majestic beauty of Grand Canyon.

  • Event took place on Saturday, May 2, 2009
    Celebrate Wildlife Day

    Grand Canyon National Park, the Grand Canyon Association, and other partners presented indoor and outdoor programs and exhibits throughout the day at the Shrine of the Ages on the South Rim of Grand Canyon. This event provided visitors with opportunities to learn about regional wildlife and about the work of wildlife biologists.   • Event took place on Saturday, April 4, 2009
    Third Grand Canyon Hiker's Symposium:
    This annual symposium presented hiking and backpacking exploits and explorations in the Grand Canyon. Each of the 20-minute presentations described a hike or overnight backpack on corridor trails or in the more remote backcountry of the park. Presented by the Grand Canyon Hikers and Backpacker's Association, in conjunction with the Grand Canyon Field Institute, at the Shrine of the Ages on the South Rim.     Grand Canyon Archeology Day
    In celebration of "Arizona Archaeology Month," the National Park Service offered  a variety of free activities at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center at Canyon View Information Plaza on the South Rim as well as a special evening presentation by Ian Hough, park archeologist. More information....


  • Grand Canyon National Park celebrated its 90th anniversary and the grand opening of the Verkamp’s Visitor Center on Thursday, February 26, 2009
     The public joined park staff, friends, partners and dignitaries for cake after a brief ceremony at the Verkamp’s Visitor Center, which is located on the South Rim next to Hopi House on the Rim Trail. Special interpretive programs, walks and tours, celebrating the park’s colorful history, occured throughout the day.

  • Park Sought Comments on Future Operation of Train Service
    Between September 4, 2008 and October 4, 2008, The National Park Service accepted public comments on the future operation of train service within Grand Canyon National Park. The NPS proposes to allow up to three round-trip passenger trains per day from Williams to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and one round-trip evening train ride per day from the South Rim to a short distance outside of the park.   • The First Grand Canyon Marathon took place on  November 15, 2008. The runners made their way through a course starting on the historic Hermit  Road, west to the Mary Jane Colter structure, Hermit's Rest, and then south toward the town of Tusayan.   Learn More...

  • Celebrate Wildlife Day - Was held on Saturday November 1, 2008
    The National Park Service shared the wonders of Grand Canyon wildlife and the world of wildlife biology while honoring the life of wildlife biologist Eric York. Read about the next Celebrate Wildlife Day that will be held during May, 2009.

    Substantive comments submitted by the deadline will be addressed in a decision document, which is anticipated to be signed and released to the public by early summer, 2008.
