Funding Mechanisms

Among the standard grant mechanisms at the NIH several may be appropriate for potential funding for secondary analysis of NHLBI's datasets. One source is the Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) mechanism which is intended to encourage exploratory and developmental research projects by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of these projects. These studies may involve considerable risk but may lead to a breakthrough in a particular area, or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on a field of biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) participates in the NIH Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research which is designed to attract and encourage individuals who are underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, biometric, clinical, social, and nursing research careers by providing a continuum of research opportunities, from high school student to faculty levels. The overall goal is to increase diversity in the research workforce by providing training opportunities to individuals whose basic or clinical research interests and skills are grounded in the advanced methods and experimental approaches needed to solve research problems. The research proposed for the supplement must be a logical extension of, but do not duplicate, research of the parent grant or contract. Secondary analyses using existing data may be used to achieve these goals.
