Conference to Focus on Partnerships

BOISE, Idaho -- The Governor's Conference on Emergency Management, sponsored by Idaho's Bureau of Disaster Services is scheduled March 7-9, 2000 at the Boise Centre on the Grove. According to Governor Dirk Kempthorne the overarching theme for this year's conference is "Working Together to Better Protect Idaho Communities," and will set the tone for workshops ranging from Floodplain Management issues to Crisis Management in Schools and Weapons of Mass Destruction. "This conference is designed to provide information for each segment of the emergency management team," said Kempthorne. "Although we can't prevent natural disasters, through planning and training we can make our communities more disaster resistant, and reduce the cost of disaster response and recovery."
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Regional Director David L. de Courcy agrees. "All-hazards approaches to preparedness and mitigation plans address "man-made" and terrorist threats as well as natural disasters," said de Courcy. "In enthusiastically embracing the Administration's Project Impact: Building Disaster Resistant Communities initiative, Idaho is ahead of the game in building community-based public and private partnerships to help prioritize these threats and allocate the appropriate resources to mitigate against them."
Conference sessions target emergency managers, responders, elected officials, public officials and the general public. Highlights range from sessions on 2002 Olympics preparation and Chemical, Biological and Radiological threats, to floodplain management issues and details on county emergency management performance grant reporting.
