State of Idaho Program Summary

Weaver, Program Director Idaho Geological Survey University of Idaho McClure Hall, Room 327 Moscow, ID 83844 - 3024 The University of Idaho remains committed to providing expert health and safety training and retraining, in compliance with 30 CFR parts 46, 48 and 49. In addition, it will offer MSHA approved classes on such varied subjects as fall protections, power haulage accident prevention, electrical hazards, silicosis prevention and respiratory protection, prevention of hearing loss, substance abuse, hand and forearm safety, Miners' rights and responsibilities, water hazards, job safety analysis, mine gasses, hazard communications as well as others. Training is conducted on-site whenever feasible and is designed to be a site specific as possible. Before training begins, the program instructor does an actual site inspection with the mine manager or safety supervisor. The training program is adapted to address their findings. Subjects such as hazards associated with the inhalation of crystalline silica, respiratory protection, noise abatement and hearing protection, all personal protective equipment, power haulage hazards, electrical safety (lock-out, tag-out), 30 CFR parts 56 and 57, substance abuse, JSA development, supervisory skills, recognition of heat stress and other health-related issues. Mine Rescue Training consists of actual mock rescues underground, the use of hands-on training, classroom instruction and mine rescue competitions. Surface mine rescue training, includes rope rescue training, confined space rescue training, knowledge and control of hazardous materials (HAZMAT). All training includes first aid. The program instructor works closely with the Central Mine Rescue in creating different and realistic rescue scenarios during the annual competition.
