Mississippi National River and Recreation Area
Teacher-Ranger-Teacher Program
Teacher Ranger Teacher

Put on the Ranger Uniform, receive training, and work for the National Park Service at the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MISS) for eight weeks this summer. In the fall, bring your experience back to the classroom to share with your students. Teachers receive a $300/week stipend, a uniform and the opportunity to have a great summer experience.

The Teacher-Ranger may work in either Resource Management or Education with a variety of interpretive programs, participate in outreach activities, take part in outdoor recreational programs, review curriculum-based school activities, help with invasive plant removal and restoration activities, assist with Junior Ranger programs, spend time at the Mississippi River Visitor Center and more!

Teacher-Rangers will need to learn and interpret core information about the Mississippi River’s natural and cultural history and the National Park Service; adapt to a wide range of visitors and circumstances; and work independently or with light supervision. Work schedules vary with weekends and some evening hours possible. Applicants should be able to tolerate a range of outdoor conditions. A driver’s license, and experience paddling and cycling are helpful.

The intent of the Teacher to Ranger to Teacher program is to provide a well-rounded experience for the teacher in a national park as a park ranger. From their experience the teachers develop National Park Service materials to be shared with their students in the classroom.

Preference will be given to teachers whose schools have diverse student populations in which at least 25% of students are considered low income and whose district (PDF) adjoins the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Other teachers may be considered for the program, but should contact Denise Niedzolkowski at 651-290-3030 ext. 238, or by email before applying.
