Medical Students, Residents, Fellows - IR Training Program Information

Interventional radiologists work in a dynamic and rapidly changing field of medicine. As the inventors of angioplasty and the catheter-delivered stent, which were first used in the legs to treat peripheral arterial disease, interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive modern medicine. Interventional radiologists offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments available coupled with diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. Applications on the horizon include nanotechnology, stem cells and gene therapy.

Fourth Annual SIR Fellows Spring Practicum

The fourth Annual SIR Fellows Spring Practicum will be held May 14-16 at the Hotel Orrington in Evanston, Ill. This year, the course will focus on two important aspects of interventional radiology: peripheral arterial interventions and oncologic interventions. The practicum will give attendees the opportunity to network with active interventional radiologists and several of the leading device representatives in the industry. Members who are current fellows-in-training or who have recently completed their fellowship would benefit from attending this course.

Practicum participants will

  • Discuss the broad spectrum of modern IR practice from the medical management of PAD patients to appropriate evaluation and treatment of Interventional Oncology patients
  • Explain how to set up and maintain an IR clinic and manage competition
  • Discuss lateset data with regards to endovascular management of femoral-popliteal, limb salvage, EVAR and carotid stenting

The course directors for the spring practicum are Robert Hieb, M.D., Alex Powell, M.D., Brian Funaki, M.D., FSIR, and Francis Facchini, M.D.
