Law Enforcement Services
A ranger takes notes while talking on the phone.

The Branch of Law Enforcement Services is staffed by a Supervisory Special Agent, who also serves as the Chief of Law Enforcement Services, three Special Agent/Criminal Investigators, a Legal Clerk, a detailed U.S. Park Ranger, a seasonal Law Student Intern, and an attached Deputy U.S. Marshal. They work in conjunction with the Assistant United States Attorney and the U.S. Magistrate Judge that are assigned to Yellowstone National Park.

The branch is responsible for processing all law enforcement actions of the approximately 100 additional uniformed law enforcement staff (U.S. Park Rangers). This includes annually over 220 physical arrests, 4,000 tickets, over 5,000 criminal incidents, and over 500 court appearances before the U.S. Magistrate. Annually the office also processes nearly 100 tort claims. The Criminal Investigations Unit (within the Branch) at any one time manages approximately 150 open criminal and civil investigations. These investigations are part of the primary mission of the Branch and cover the full spectrum of criminal activity, from crimes against people and property, drug crime, the resource and wildlife crimes. The Branch also manages the park's Special Operations Team, and coordinates hundreds of hours of advanced and specialized law enforcement and public safety training.

The Branch Chief and the staff provide the Chief Ranger and the Superintendent park-wide oversight for all regulatory, enforcement, and legal matters. The Branch is also responsible for maintaining all legal and case records, for supervising the 24-Hour Emergency Communications Center.

The Branch of Law Enforcement Services is located in Building 38 at Mammoth Hot Springs and can be reached at 307 344 2120 or 307 344 2123.
