                **CENSUS BUREAU MEDIA ADVISORY**

   Commerce Secretary and Census Bureau Director to Announce
    Campaign to Encourage Civic Participation in Census 2000

   Commerce Secretary William M. Daley and Census Bureau Director Kenneth
Prewitt will announce a new initiative to encourage participation in
Census 2000 at the grassroots level in a news conference at the National
Press Club on Tuesday, Jan. 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. EST.

   The initiative, called How America Knows What America Needs, challenges
communities to increase participation levels in Census 2000 over their
1990 levels.

    Date:Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000
    Time: 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.  EST
    Place:National Press Club ballroom
   14th and F Streets, N.W.
   Washington, D.C.

   The news conference will be webcast live via the Internet from the
Census Bureau's Internet site http://www.census.gov.
