                    **CENSUS BUREAU MEDIA ADVISORY**

                   Under Secretary of Commerce to Hold 
             Community Briefing on Re-engineering 2010 Census

What:  Dr. Kathleen B. Cooper, Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the 
       Department of Commerce, along with Census and state officials,
       will discuss with local officials and community and business  
       leaders the Census Bureau's innovative plan to re-engineer the 2010 
       census.  Through early operational planning, modernizing its 
       address list with state-of-the-art global positioning systems and 
       replacing the census long-form with the American Community Survey 
       (pending congressional funding), the Census Bureau will be able to 
       greatly improve the accuracy and efficiency of the next
       census while providing data every year, instead of once a decade.
