Spring Road Opening Schedule (weather permitting)

The park's interior roads reopen to automobile travel between mid-April and the end of May. 

Please Note:

The North Entrance road between Gardiner, Montana and Mammoth Hot Springs, and the park’s Northeast Entrance at Cooke City, Montana, is regularly plowed and is open to wheeled vehicle traffic all year. However, entry into the park from the Northeast Entrance is not possible duirng the winter months.

Spring schedule

April 17 — The first to reopen are the roads from Yellowstone’s North and West Entrances to Norris, Madison, Canyon and Old Faithful, which open to visitors on Friday, April 17. 

May 1 — The road linking Canyon, Fishing Bridge and the East Entrance opens on Friday, May 1.

May 8 — Travel from the South Entrance to Grant, West Thumb and Fishing Bridge is set to begin Friday, May 8, with travel from West Thumb over Craig Pass to Old Faithful expected to begin shortly thereafter, once repairs are completed on the Isa Lake Bridge. 

Mid-May — Travel from Cooke City (near the park's Northeast Entrance) over Colter Pass to the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway and the Long Lake gate typically also opens by mid-May. 

The balance of the Beartooth Highway to Red Lodge, Montana, and the road between Tower Fall and Canyon over Dunraven Pass opens the Friday before the Memorial Day Holiday weekend, weather permitting.




Bear Safety
Firehole Lake Drive; the Fountain Paint Pot Nature Trail, boardwalk and parking area; and the Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk and parking area; are all closed from now through Friday, May 22. Prior to hiking, skiing, or snowshoeing in the park, check at park visitor centers or the park web site at http://www.nps.gov/yell/parkmgmt/bearclosures.htm




Traveling to Yellowstone
All communities near and on the way to Yellowstone are open year-round. Information about cities or towns within 200 hundred miles of the park, is available at http://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/cities.htm.

Visitors should be prepared for a wide range temperatures and weather. Recorded information on road conditions is available 24 hours a day by calling 307-344-2117. For information on trails and camping call 307-344-2160 during business hours.

Roosevelt Arch at Yellowstone's North Entrance

The Roosevelt Arch is located at the North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The cornerstone of the arch was laid by President Theodore Roosevelt.
