Demographic

States in Focus: Pre-Primary Snapshots— A look at the population, selected characteristics and 2004 voting percentage of each state as it approaches its 2008 primary or caucus. Florida’s profile will be released on Jan. 24 and Maine’s on Jan. 31. The Super Tuesday states will be profiled on Jan. 30.

Voting-Age Population by State: July 1, 2007— For each state, the total number of residents, the total population 18 and older and the percentage of the total population 18 and older. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late January.)

Living Arrangements of Children: 2004— Examines the diversity of children’s living arrangements, from living with two biological parents to living in blended families. These national-level data come from the Survey of Income and Program Participation. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late January.)

What It’s Worth: Field of Training and Economic Status: 2004— We’ve seen the data showing that more education usually equals a higher salary. But what fields of study have the greater payoff? This series of tables from the Survey of Income and Program Participation examines the relationship between field of training and monthly earnings. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late January.)

Maternity Leave and Employment Patterns: 1961–2003— Analyzes trends in women’s work experience before their first child, identifies the maternity leave arrangements they use before and after the birth and examines how rapidly they return to work. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early February.)

Who’s Minding the Kids? Child Care Arrangements: Spring 2005— Tables provide data on child care arrangements of preschoolers and grade-schoolers according to various demographic characteristics of the mother. They also profile children who care for themselves on a regular basis and examine the size of weekly child care payments made by selected characteristics of the family. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early February.)

County and City Data Book— Where is the fastest growing labor force? Which city gets the most rainfall? This data book provides population, housing and business data for counties and cities with 25,000 or more residents, and places of 2,500 or more residents. It incorporates information from government agencies and private nonprofit organizations, covering everything from area populations to vital statistics. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early February.)

Profiles of Older Workers— The Census Bureau, in partnership with 31 states, has launched a series of reports on workers 55 and older. The next report in the series due for publication at the end of January is Delaware, to be followed each week by Colorado, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Maryland and Kentucky. (Tentatively scheduled for released on a flow basis.)

Economic

Annual Capital Expenditures Survey: 2006— These tables provide detailed information about nonfarm business spending on new plant and equipment, and measure the stock of existing facilities. Businesses can use these data for market analysis, economic forecasting and identifying business opportunities. (Scheduled for release on Jan. 24.)

Top-Ranked States by Industry— Alaska led the nation in per capita revenue for chiropractor’s offices. Delaware led in shoe sales; Montana in bars and taverns. Economically speaking, every state is tops in something. A new Web page — highlighting facts from the 2002 Economic Census about every state by receipts per capita for every industry — helps promote the 2007 Economic Census, now under way. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late January.)

Current Industrial Reports (CIR)

The CIR program provides monthly, quarterly and annual measures of industrial activity. The primary objective of the CIR program is to produce timely, accurate data on production and shipments of selected products. The data are used to satisfy economic policy needs and for market analysis, forecasting and decision-making in the private sector. <http://www.census.gov/cir/www/index.html>

Fats and Oils: Oilseed Crushings: December 2007— This monthly manufacturing report shows production of crude vegetable oil and production of corn and soybean products at oil mill locations. Some import and export figures are also available. This report also shows the production of corn grind and corn by-products in wet and dry mill ethanol plants. (Scheduled for release on Jan. 24.)

Consumption on the Cotton System and Stocks: December 2007— This monthly report shows the consumption of cotton and manmade fiber staple by domestic manufacturing plants. North Carolina consumed more of these products in November than all other states combined. (Scheduled for release on Jan. 24.)

Glass Containers: December 2007— Manufacturers produced 1.7 billion beer bottles, and another 101 million liquor bottles, in November. This monthly report shows shipments, production and stocks of manufactured glass containers. (Scheduled for release on Feb. 7.)

Flour Milling Products: Fourth Quarter 2007— Kansas had the largest daily capacity of any state in wheat production in the third quarter of 2007. This quarterly manufacturing report shows production, stocks and capacity of flour milling products. (Scheduled for release on Feb. 8.)

Facts for Features

Super Bowl XLII (Feb. 3)— Facts and figures relating to the 42nd edition of our nation’s most celebrated sporting event. Includes demographic data for Glendale, Ariz., site of the big game, as well as cities represented by the two participating NFL teams. (Tentatively scheduled for release on Jan. 22.)

Editor’s note: Facts for Features are customarily released about two months before an observance in order to accommodate magazine production timelines.

South Carolina in Focus: Census Bureau Pre-Primary Snapshot— Jan. 16— South Carolina has a higher percentage of blacks, a lower percentage of Hispanics and a lower percentage of foreign born than the nation as a whole. Nevada in Focus: Census Bureau Pre-Caucus Snapshot— Jan. 16— Nevada has a higher percentage of Hispanics, a higher median household income and a faster-growing population than the nation — and one of the lowest voting percentages. The Effects of Taxes and Transfers on Income and Poverty in the United States: 2006— Jan. 15— These estimates of income and poverty for various demographic groups use a series of alternative income definitions that take into account government taxes and transfers. Michigan in Focus: Census Bureau Pre-Primary Snapshot— Jan. 14— Michigan has a higher percentage of whites, a lower percentage of Hispanics and votes at a slightly higher percentage than the nation as a whole. Internet address:

Educational Attainment in the United States: 2007— Jan. 10— More women than men age 25 to 29 have college degrees. Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE): 2005— Jan. 9— These tables provide estimates of income and poverty for states and counties, as well as estimates of poverty and population for school districts, median household income and poverty rates of various age groups. SAIPE provides annual updates for the administration of federal programs and the allocation of federal funds to local jurisdictions. Computers and Peripheral Equipment: 3rd Quarter 2007— This quarterly manufacturing report shows domestic shipment data for electronic computers, computer storage devices, terminals and other computer peripheral equipment. Some related import/export data is provided as well. The third quarter report showed $8.6 billion of electronic computers were shipped. Telecommunications: 3rd Quarter 2007— On a quarterly basis, this manufacturing report gives data for telephone apparatus, radio and television broadcasting and wireless communications equipment, and other communications equipment such as alarm systems, vehicular and pedestrian traffic control equipment, and intercom systems. In the third quarter report, the largest product class was wireline voice and data network equipment at $4.8 billion followed by radio station equipment at $3.9 billion. <http://www.census.gov/industry/1/mq334p073.pdf>

Fats and Oils: Production, Consumption, and Stocks: November 2007— America consumed 2.0 billion pounds of edible oil in November. This monthly manufacturing report shows production, consumption and warehouse stocks of edible and inedible fats and oils. Internet address: <http://www.census.gov/industry/1/m311k0711.pdf>

Civil Aircraft and Aircraft Engines: November 2007— This monthly manufacturing report showed that there were 379 civil aircraft produced, valued at $3.8 billion, in November.
