Jefferson National Expansion Memorial
Engages

Engagés were hired to make the journey for only the first year. They were "special labor," necessary to help with rowing and pulling the keelboat and pirogues up the Missouri River. They spent the winter of 1804-1805 with the Corps of Discovery in the Mandan Villages. In the spring of 1805, the engagés returned with the keelboat, diaries, and specimens to St. Louis.
