USG Urges Muslims to Adopt Family Planning

The Ministry of Health (MoH), in collaboration with the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM), Quadria Muslim Association (QMAM) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Community Based Family Planning and HIV/AIDS (CFPHS) Project held a national conference on Family Planning (FP) and HIV/AIDS in the Islamic context from August 4 to 5, 2009 in Lilongwe.  The two-day conference focused on family planning and prevention of HIV/AIDS among Muslim communities in Malawi through appropriate Islamic teachings.  [more]

NGO World Vision praises Obama’s partnership approach

Washington — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is putting a spotlight on food security and partnerships as she makes her first official visit to sub-Saharan Africa, a region that the international nongovernmental organization (NGO) World Vision says is “riddled with hunger.”  Before leaving on her August 4–14, seven-nation trip, Clinton told a World Food Prize ceremony at the State Department, “The issue of chronic hunger and food security is at the top of the agenda that we’re pursuing here in the State Department and in the Obama administration.”  [more]

President Obama Touches Malawians

The U.S. Embassy invited senior Malawian Government officials and civil society leaders to view the speech delivered by President Barack Obama in Accra Ghana at the Public Affairs Section in Lilongwe.  The Embassy also held similar “viewing parties” at American Corners at Mzuzu University and the Polytechnic.  Participants hailed President Obama for his call on African leaders to commit themselves to good governance to enhance the continent’s development.  [more]

A dream comes true: A summer school scholarship to Philips Exeter Academy

Fifteen year old Idah Savala, a Form 3 student at Providence Girls Secondary School, will be travelling to the U.S. this month after she won a summer school scholarship to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.  Idah is one of a handful of students around the world to win this summer school scholarship to the prestigious Exeter Academy.
Raised by a single mother, life has not been easy for Idah.  Her mother struggled to provide for basic necessities for her seven children, let alone pay for their school fees.  Despite her background, Idah excelled in primary school and won the Ambassadors Girls Scholarship (AGSP) through which she received financial and mentoring support.  [more]

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network, announced today the four 2009 winners of the Fulbright-mtvU Fellowships, established in 2007 to promote “the power of music” as a global force for mutual understanding. The Fellowships were awarded to Andrew Magill of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, Michael Silvers of the University of California – Los Angeles, Rod Solaimani of Georgetown University and Tina Wadhwa of Columbia University. Recipients were chosen through a multi-tiered, merit-based selection process beginning with field and discipline reviews by U.S. and foreign academic leaders and area experts. mtvU and musical icons Death Cab for Cutie, My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way, Santigold and Vampire Weekend then reviewed and nominated the top qualified candidates. Final selection was made by the Presidentially-appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.  [more]
