Recovery Act Limited Competition: Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) (RFA-OD-09-007)

National Library of Medicine

Purpose

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) offers an opportunity for Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) grants with funds from the Recovery Act, to stimulate research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the Nation's research scientists, but that have not been major recipients of NIH support. The deadline for receipt of applications is September 24, 2009.

These AREA grants will be funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009. The Recovery Act is an unprecedented effort to jumpstart our economy, create or save millions of jobs, and put a down payment on addressing long-neglected challenges so our country can thrive in the 21st century.

Applying for Recovery Act AREA (R15) Grants

To apply for a Recovery Act AREA grant, follow the instructions in Recovery Act Limited Competition: Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) (RFA-OD-09-007). Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov.

The total project period for a Recovery Act AREA grant application may be up to three years. Recovery Act AREA grants will go through the standard two-level cycle of peer review.

Areas of Scientific Priority

NLM’s participation in the Recovery Act AREA grant program is confined to applications that address research in biomedical informatics and bioinformatics. Applicants are encouraged to look at NLM’s Challenge Grant topics listed at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/ep/challenge.html as possible new directions for their work, along with other informatics-based challenge topics listed in RFA OD-09-003.

Funding Priorities

Overall, NLM expects to devote at least $500,000 to this Recovery Act AREA grant program into basic and applied research in biomedical informatics.

Applicants may request a maximum of $300,000 total direct costs plus applicable Facilities & Administrative (F&A)/indirect costs for the entire project period of up to three years.

Application Receipt Date and Timeline for Review

The deadline for receipt of Recovery Act AREA grants is September 24, 2009.

Recovery Act AREA grants will be reviewed by the end of November 2009, with notification of award by February 2010.
